Unable to Sign in Skype? Fix Skype Login Issue

If you are unable to sign in to Skype, the first step you should take is to update your Skype with latest version, because mostly the login issue arises due to outdated version of Skype.

If you still face the challenges after installing the latest version of Skype then go with the possible following solutions:

#1 Is your Internet Connection Working Fine

You can check your internet connection by browsing few website like skypepasswordrecovery.com. If the website get loaded quickly, it mean your internet is working fine. Sometime the website get loaded on browser due to caching, so make sure that you browse your browser in Inccognito mode.

If you are unable to load the websites at all, then please assure your device is connected properly to the network.

#2 Is Skype Down Today?

If your internet is working fine, the problem may be due to the Down of Skype server. You can check with the Skype Down Detector.

If there are no such issues reported on Skype down detector or Heartbeat, then go to the next solution.

#3 Are you able to view the sign-in screen?

If you are not getting the login screen there is some issue with Skype application. Uninstall the Skype & install it again.

#4 Have you Entered the Credentials Correctly?

The best way to make sure if you are entering correct username & password is to login on Skype for web. There could be unlimited number of reasons due to which you may encountering error in sign in to Skype for desktop. If you are able to login your Skype account through web, it means credentials are working fine.

If you can’t sign in to Skype on Web also, then you should try to reset Skype Password.

#5 Is your computer up-to-date?

Your computer’s hardware or software may preventing the Skype to login your account.

  • You can check the prerequisites for Skype installation. If anything required.
  • Also make sure that your system have the updated version of the software & you have recently updated your OS as well & try to update the hardware driver as well

#6 Have you deleted your shared.xml file?

Skype has a configuration or setting file called shared.xml, and if you have delete the file, your Skype Sign in issue may get resolved. Do not worry about the file, it get created automatically, when you login your Skype account. and in some cases deleting this file can solve sign-in problems. The file is re-created when you sign back in to Skype.

Let’s see the procedure to delete the shared.xml file.

  • If the Skype icon is previewed in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen, right-click it and select Quit.
  • Click on Start button, type "run" and press Enter.
  • Type "%appdata%\skype" and click OK.
  • Locate and delete the file shared.xml. The file may be displayed as shared if file extensions are not displayed by default on your computer.
  • If you cannot find this file:
  • Click on Start, type "run" and press Enter.
  • Type "control folders" and click OK.
  • In the View tab, ensure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled.
  • Repeat the instructions from the beginning.
  • Restart Skype.

Let’s Diagnose what is Preventing Skype from connecting

If you’ve gone through all of the above steps and you’re still facing challenges, you can try few more things:

  • Check if your firewall isn’t blocking Skype. If it is, you can change your firewall settings to allow Skype to get through.
  • If you think your router might be preventing Skype to sign in, then immediately contact your network admin.
  • If you are running proxy server, please make sure that Skype can connect to your proxy server.
  • For Windows machine, check if the ports required by Skype are open.
  • Also make sure Skype isn’t already running in the background.

Common Scenario Where Skype Sign in Issue arises

Case#1: Can sign in the Skype Account with Web, but not with desktop client.

When I tried to login Skype with desktop client a spinny animated icon displayed, then an error message appear: “Check your Internet connection”

Solution: You can restart your Router; sometime it occurs due to Skype traffic over certain routers causes issues

Case #2 When I am trying to login my Skype account, I provided my Skype credential on the sign in screen and click sign in, the window becomes white for a few seconds and then takes me back to the password screen.

Solution: This may occur because of over traffic on Skype Account. For this you need to wait till the server get up.
